Life as a Software Engineer in Singapore | salary expectations, dating, career, more

A quick chat with a software engineer living and working abroad in Singapore

by thefanggirl

Back in my days in Singapore, I had met Jake, a contact and now friend in the tech space.

He came from South Korea and has spent close to three years in Singapore at this point. We have a chat about how he started his software engineering career in Singapore, discusses salary expectations for a more mid-level engineer, and how he perceives dating and making friends abroad.

Resources we talked about (and more):

MyCareersFuture – to find the salary bandwidth

As shared from MyCareers Future themselves, “MyCareersFuture is a portal that aims to provide Singapore Citizens and Permanent Residents with a fast and smart job search service to match them with relevant jobs, based on their skills and
competencies. The portal was developed by Workforce Singapore, in partnership with Government Technology Agency.

The portal enables jobseekers to be more aware of the skills they possess, and connects them to relevant jobs based on their current skills and competencies. It also highlights jobs which are eligible for Government support through WSG’s Adapt and Grow Initiative. Jobseekers can also find career-related content on MyCareersFuture through the Seek Career Advice, including career insights and career guidance to help facilitate their career planning process.”

Cost of Living Comparison between two countries

They have a Cost of Living Comparison tool that allows you to effortlessly compare the cost of living and its indices, including the Cost of Living Index, Cost of Living Plus Rent Index, Groceries Index, Restaurants Index, and Local Purchasing Power, between two countries. This is extremely helpful so you get a better understanding of how your cost of living will inflate or deflate. Check it out.

While he was visiting in San Francisco, I also took him and our other friend to a comedy show and dinner at Lily. We were in the Richmond area, so if you are open to taking a trek out there, you can have the same itinerary. It includes an early dinner and then a fun show.

If you want the itinerary to show friends around in San Francisco, I’ll share it below:

Crazy Funny Asians (free if you book earlier)
Neck Of The Woods
406 Clement Street San Francisco, CA 94118

Expect to pay for 1-2 drinks at the bar as a way to support comedians in San Francisco. However, your ticket is free if you book earlier on SF Fun Cheap. The comedians are pretty funny, but note that they aren’t Ronny Chieng.

Lily on Clement – early girl dinner
Address: 225 Clement St, San Francisco, CA 94118

Delicious up-scale Vietnamese food with great ambiance and friendly staff. Friday to Sunday 5-6 pm, you get a really great app and entree for 36 pp.
